Gifted and Talented Initiatives for 2010

Gifted and talented opportunities being implemented in 2010 include whole-school, faculty initiated or small group niche programs.

These programs are set beyond the regular classroom and programs; they require dedicated and sustained application by students; enable participants to develop higher order thinking and problem solving skills; enable participants to attain higher order outcomes; and, meet the standards of Quality as defined in the Quality Teaching Framework.

Some Gifted and Talented opportunities will extend beyond the school grounds to include students from local primary schools and other high schools that are community, state or nationally based.

Program Details:

The Prairiewood Writers Guild: Talented writers across the school will have their writing talents developed to publishable quality. (Term 1)

Macbeth: A Shakespearean drama production with a Prairiewood twist. (Term 1)

Talent Quest: Talented performers are invited to compete for a place in the ‘big event’ through a series of heats held in Term 1. Only the best of our best perform for the school community on an evening in Term 2. This event also provides a real-life platform for our VET Entertainment students to master the skills and competencies required of this competitive industry.

Elite Rugby Union Sports Program: A high level, intensive program of excellence in Rugby union for our talented sportsmen competing against top Rugby schools across the Sydney region. (Terms 1 and 2)

Prairiewood On Show: Talented Stage 6 VET students from Hospitality, Primary Industries, Retail and Entertainment will combine with talented Dance and Music students to present a total package of fine food and entertainment for the school community. (Term 2)

Mini-United Nations Assembly (or MUNA): This a full day event in which students will explore current international issues in a high level public speaking and debating forum. (Term 2)

Gazing at the Stars: A mid year astronomical experience for talented galactic explorers focusing on the school’s new observatory and a field trip to Coonabarabran. (Term 2 or 3)

An Artistic Flair: Talented creative students in stages four and five will be invited to attend specialist workshops in the Visual Arts that will specialise in Ceramics and Digital Photography. (Terms 1, 2 and 3)

Brainiac Quizarama: A Middle School knowledge competition in which talented students from Years 7 and 8 will team up with talented students from Grades 5 and 6 in our local feeder schools to engage in a competition of knowledge and current affairs for the Brainiac Cup. Students from other local schools will also be invited to participate and “take up the challenge” in the Championship event. (Term 3)

Geography Skilling Challenge: A Year 7 G&T skills based geography event that matches our finest with Year 7 students from schools across the Sydney South West Region. (Term 3)

‘The Arts’ Exhibition and Performances: A major exhibition of gifted and talented students works across the school in the Creative and Performing Arts. The exhibition will launch the creative writings of our Writers Guild students. (Term 4)
